The bodies of crypto businessman Roman Novak and his wife, Anna, were discovered in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This was reported on December 1st by the 78.ru television channel on Telegram. The couple's remains were found in a desert vacant lot approximately two weeks ago.
Murder and Kidnapping
According to the television channel, on November 7th, it was reported that the couple had been murdered in the UAE. They were kidnapped for extortion, but when the criminals failed to pay the ransom, they were killed. The Investigative Committee of Russia (ICRF) has opened a criminal investigation into the couple's disappearance.
All three suspects in the murder have been arrested and, as it turns out, are also Russian citizens. One of the detainees, Konstantin Sh., was previously sentenced to 15 years for drug trafficking in 2010.
Reasons for the Kidnapping
Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson Irina Volk reported that the kidnapping of the St. Petersburg family was motivated by extortion of cryptocurrency. The criminals rented cars and premises to hold the hostages, indicating a pre-planned operation.
