A scammer masquerading as well-known crypto trader Ansem on Twitter illegally obtained more than $2.6 million worth of Solana (SOL) tokens through a phishing scheme, as detailed by blockchain analyst ZachXBT.

An attacker took advantage of traders' fascination with memcoins
Taking advantage of the appeal of memcoins to traders, the attacker put his plan into action. By creating a copy of Ansem's account with minor changes to the username, the scammer strategically shared a link to a bogus memcoin presale called BULL on Solana in the comments of Ansem's posts. Unsuspecting users clicked on the link, inadvertently giving the scammer access to their wallets. Notably, the scammer's largest loot amounted to about $1.2 million.
Despite global oversight of the cryptocurrency market, combating fraud remains a challenge. The latest figures show a sharp rise in the number of victims of phishing attacks in February, surpassing January's figures by ten thousand people, albeit with a slight decrease in the amounts stolen. The growing threat of cybercrime is attracting mainstream media attention, and the topic has even inspired cinematic interpretations related to cryptojacking.
Scammers use a range of deceptive tactics, often posing as legitimate cryptocurrency organizations or well-known personalities on social media platforms to lure unsuspecting victims. Twitter in particular has become a prime target for such schemes, as evidenced by recent hacks affecting high-profile individuals such as the managing partner of DWF Labs, accounting firm CertiK, and prominent data aggregator CoinGecko.
The continuation of such scams underscores the critical need for increased vigilance and proactive measures in the cryptocurrency community to protect against the increasingly sophisticated actions of cybercriminals. As threat actors continue to utilize digital platforms to generate illicit revenue, strengthening cybersecurity practices and increasing user awareness remains paramount to mitigate the risks associated with malicious schemes in the cryptocurrency space.
