Grok Enters Service: Musk’s xAI Grants AI Access to U.S. Military Secrets
A significant shift has occurred in the U.S. defense sector: the Grok AI model from Elon Musk’s xAI has been officially authorized to operate within classified military circuits. According to Axios, citing Department of Defense sources, the Pentagon has selected Grok to replace Anthropic’s Claude, which was previously the only AI tool approved for deep integration into Army systems.
The agreement grants xAI the right to operate within infrastructure used for intelligence analysis, weapons design, and combat mission coordination. The military's decision was driven by Musk’s willingness to accept terms that competitors deemed ethically unacceptable.
Anthropic’s Ethical Deadlock: Why Claude is No Longer Favored
Until recently, Anthropic’s Claude held a monopoly in the Pentagon's classified networks. However, the partnership fractured when the military demanded the AI be used for "all lawful purposes" without exception.
Anthropic established strict "red lines":
Refusal to participate in mass surveillance of U.S. citizens.
Prohibition on developing fully autonomous weapons systems (killer robots).
As Anthropic’s leadership refused to compromise its safety principles, the Pentagon sought a more compliant partner. xAI agreed to all of the department's terms, forming the foundation of the new deal.
Hard Talk: Pete Hegseth’s Ultimatum
The split with Anthropic was far from amicable. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth held a meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, which witnesses described as "extremely tense." Amodei was essentially given an ultimatum: either remove all software restrictions or be labeled a “supply chain risk.”
This bureaucratic label is effectively a "black mark" for business, making any further cooperation with the U.S. public sector impossible. Despite the pressure, Anthropic maintains its stance, though replacing their product will be difficult for the military. Claude is already deeply integrated into critical processes, including high-profile operations such as the attempted capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro (via the Palantir platform).
The Line Forms at the Pentagon: Who is Next?
The success of xAI has spurred other tech giants. Currently, Google Gemini and ChatGPT are already being tested in unclassified military systems, but the military is now accelerating their transition to the classified segment.
Current Status of AI Giants:
Google (Gemini): Close to signing an agreement under the Pentagon's "all lawful purposes" terms.
OpenAI (ChatGPT): Negotiations are ongoing, complicated by legal and technical issues, but the department expects eventual compliance.
Industry Outlook: The xAI-Pentagon deal marks a transition from "ethical AI" to "pragmatic AI" in the defense sphere. Elon Musk’s readiness to follow DoD directives without restriction gives his company a significant advantage in the fight for multi-billion dollar military contracts, reshaping the AI market landscape.
